As a luxury car owner you probably try to keep your car as clean as possible. So it can be very off-putting to discover that their interior door handles, especially those on the passenger side, have become sticky and mushy over time in your BMW.

Unfortunately this has become a relatively common occurrence in certain BMW models, but it’s a good thing that there   are some things you can do to help prevent this. If you find this happening to your car, then it’s a good thing fixing the problem or replacing the handle is a pretty simple procedure for an experienced BMW mechanic.

Prevent Corroded Door Handles

The type of plastic that BMW decided to use for their door handles are particularly susceptible to corrosion. This is something you most likely won’t notice at first, but over time you might start to notice that your handles are starting to develop a sticky residue. Fortunately there are a few things you can do to attempt to prevent this from happening, or at least slow down the process.

Now, let’s take a look at why the corrosion happens in the first place. A few possible reasons why your door handles look like their corroding is from heat and breakdown corrosion. Another possible reason for corrosion is the chemicals that you use to clean your car with. Now depending on what kind of cleaners you use, they could be harsh on the plastic and begin to eat away at the material.

Now this doesn’t mean you should stop cleaning your car. Instead you should try to find a different cleaning solution, something that is gentler- consider one that is made from natural materials rather than harsh chemicals created in a lab.

As for heat, there is really only one true solution, and that is to try to keep the car out of hot spaces. Try to park your car in a garage and avoid leaving your car out in a hot outdoor parking lot for long periods of time. Consider parking under trees and shade as they can help bring the interior temperature of your car down as opposed to sitting in direct sunlight.

Ways to Fix Corroded Door Handles

If your BMW’s door handles are already corroded and prevention is no longer a choice, then you will want to get them fixed. Now there are two main ways to go about doing that:

  1. This one is probably the least time-consuming and expensive- you’ll simply want to get them wrapped in some sort of cover. A BMW mechanic might be able to do this for you if you like. If you go decide on this,  then you can get a little creative and find a door handle cover with a fun design or a cool color.
  2. This option might take a little more time and tends to require a more specialized knowledge of BMWs- get the door handles replaced. Keep in mind due to the way BMW has designed their parts, this would require you to take off the entire door panel in order to replace just the handle, so this is something you would definitely need to leave up to a trained professional.
