While a lot of people look at a map and think that a road trip to Miami is a great idea, there are many shorter trips right around West Palm Beach. Also, since August tends to be rainy, traveling very far in the rain might not be so pleasant. Here, then, are some ideas for road trips closer to West Palm Beach.

Jonathan Dickinson State Park

This state park is north of West Palm Beach, and a short drive up Highway 1. Note that the park is open Thursday through Monday, so it’s a great getaway for a weekend. There are a nature center and plenty of wildlife. You can take a boat or a charter out to Trapper John’s campsite. You might want to skip the swimming since there are gators! You can picnic, use the bike trails, or visit the highest point in South Florida–Hobe Mountain. And lots of people recommend camping there, too, if you like to camp!

Lion Country Safari

Another excellent and fun road trip is Lion Country Safari, only about 45 minutes away from West Palm Beach. This is a drive-through, stay-in-your-car safari, which could be good if there’s drizzle in the forecast. Kids love seeing the animals! There’s also a park where you can walk, with miniature golf, rides, snacks for the kids, and mining for gemstones. Fun fact: Jane Goodall herself endorsed Lion Country Safari’s Chimpanzee Island!

Tip: Be sure to wash your windows before you go, as it’s a requirement to keep your windows up, and you’ll want to take pictures!

Loggerhead Marinelife Center

If you like turtles, you’ll love Loggerhead Marinelife Center, which rescues and rehabilitates sea turtles. It’s only about 30 minutes from West Palm Beach. Everyone who works here loves sea turtles, so you’ll be fascinated on the guided tour. This place is a labor of love, run by volunteers, and entrance is by donation. Since the Center is a small place, you could combine this with a trip to Jonathan Dickinson State Park, also up Highway 1.
